The 44 incarnation of Earth Day will take place next Tuesday, April 22nd. The movement began with almost universal support from the left and right of the political spectrum. The Nixon administration spearheaded not only the formation of the EPA but the Clean Air Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Endangered Species Act.
Kudos to the political leaders of the time who had the ingenuity for doing what made sense. Now, 44 years later as the peril of environmental ignorance poses an even greater threat to the world, one faction of society continues to perpetrate a ludicrous campaign of doubt and denial. One wonders how long after science proved the world was not flat did doubters continue to insist that it was?
Listen up people, it’s 2014. Why, when the vast majority of Americans entrust their very lives to their doctors and the science that drives medicine do they doubt or disbelieve the science associated with climate?
Yes, we are all for jobs and economic growth but not at the expense of the planet or the lives of our children and grandchildren. We can no longer put unbridled growth and corporate profit ahead of what makes sense for the existence of our planet.
